A man comes on to the stage and starts sweeping. Very shortly afterwards it becomes apparent that he is a great deal more than he seems. "Out of his mind" he creates a Young Man and a Young Woman, thereby setting in train an allegory that embraces the whole world and the history of its inhabitants. Against him is ranged the formidable Aunt Harriet.
It appears, however, that even the Sweeper, who, seemingly, made all things is not the final arbiter of events. As the action darkens into cruelty and horror, the Sweeper himself suffers, but the final note is one of redemption and hope.
At the last moment, the Manager himself appears and the Sweeper is once more working his broom across the deserted stage.
