On November 7th 1938, Ernst von Rath, secretary to the German Embassy in Paris, was shot by a Jewish refugee, Herschel Grynsznap.

The Nazis seized this opportunity to arrange "spontaneous actions" against the jewish community, which took place on the night of November 9th - 10th.

Thousands of businesses and homes were attacked and practically all the synagogues were burnt down or demolished. Over twenty thousand people were arrested and taken to the concentration camps and at least thirty six were killed, all Jews.

Kristallnacht (Crystal Night, the Night of Broken Glass)

AUSCHWITZ
"Nothing is more difficult than to have to make one's way through this business cold, unsympathetic and without pity."
"There was no escape for me. I had to carry on the process of extermination, of mass murder, to live with it, to be an unemotional spectator of something at which my whole soul revolted."
These quotes are attributed to Rudolph Hoss, the camp commander for a time. He was sentenced to death for his crimes against humanity and was hanged at Auschwitz in March 1947.

Over one million Jews were murdered at the Auschwitz death camp.
